It is easy to think that you can drink as much as you like of most liquids as the real culprits when it comes to sugar, salt and calories is food. This is not the case, most drinks can provide a fifth of our daily calorie intake, therefore it’s important to choose the right drinks and with careful thought and planning, it’s possible to get the right balance of nutrients, multi-vitamins and minerals our bodies need from fluids without the sugar and sweeteners many drinks contain.

Water and Weight Loss

We have already mentioned earlier the benefits of adding more water to your diet. Here we look at the benefits of drinking water and the potential consequences of not drinking enough.

Water can have a really positive impact on your metabolism and drinking a glass before dinner can make you feel fuller for longer. What’s more; if you replace fizzy drinks with water you are eliminating calories dramatically. If you feel drained and lacking in energy this could be because you are dehydrated and if your body doesn’t get enough water your heart must work harder to pump blood around your body. A high percentage of our brain is made up of water and this affects your mind and body if you’re dehydrated. Keep some water by your desk and carry some around with you, feeling thirsty is a good sign that you’re already dehydrated.

Water can also prevent your muscles from seizing up and cramping and it also helps to lubricate joints around the body, when you’re hydrated you can exercise for longer periods.

Water is also good for your skin, if you drink enough you can see the difference, your skin will appear clearer and plumper and this is because it flushes out circulation and gets rid of impurities. So drinking more water can only be a good thing. Water is also good for your digestion; helping to get rid of waste and flush it smoothly through your digestive tract.  Bowel movements can be more difficult when you’re dehydrated and harder to pass, if you make sure you drink enough water you can avoid this, water also help avoid the risk of developing kidney stones, as water helps dilute the salts and minerals in urine.

Make sure you drink up to eight glasses per day and drink more if you are exercising or if you are likely to sweat heavily. Keep in mind you may need to drink less water if you have other drinks throughout the day.
